Who Optimizes the Optimizer?

godon optimizes live systems. An operator defines objectives, the breeder explores parameter space, the observer collects results. Over many trials, the system converges on better configuration.

But godon itself is a system with parameters. Detection sensitivity, watermark configuration, observation windows, guardrail thresholds, breeder meta-configuration. These parameters determine how well godon works. Who tunes them?

godon as an Optimization Target

Every component in the godon stack has tunable parameters and measurable outcomes:

  • Watermark design — frequency, amplitude, number of frequencies, pattern shape. These determine how detectable the signal is against the system's noise floor. Too weak and interference goes undetected. Too strong and the watermark distorts the optimization itself.
  • Detection parameters — observation window length, statistical significance threshold, permutation count for hypothesis testing, sampling rate. These determine detection accuracy, false positive rate, and detection latency.
  • Observer sensitivity — how aggressively the observer declares a coupling detection. Looser thresholds catch more interference but risk false positives. Tighter thresholds are reliable but may miss weak coupling.
  • Guardrail thresholds — the safety limits that protect production systems during optimization. These could adapt based on observed system behavior rather than remaining static.
  • Breeder meta-configuration — trial budget (min/max iterations), parallelism, time constraints, completion criteria. These determine how thoroughly the search space is explored and how quickly results converge. Currently set by the operator. Could be tuned based on observed convergence behavior.

Each of these is a parameter. Each affects a measurable outcome. This makes each one an optimization problem — the same kind of problem godon already solves for external systems.

The Recursive Pattern

The pattern is recursive but not paradoxical. The optimization framework is general: given a search space, an objective function, and feedback, it converges on better configurations. This applies to infrastructure parameters. It also applies to godon's own parameters.

The loop would look like this:

  1. Define a quality metric for a godon component (e.g., detection accuracy across known coupling scenarios)
  2. The breeder explores configurations of that component's parameters
  3. Each configuration is evaluated against the quality metric
  4. The system converges on parameters optimized for the specific deployment

This isn't science fiction. The framework exists. The mechanism exists. The search algorithms exist. The missing piece is connecting them — making godon's own parameters discoverable as optimization targets and defining appropriate objective functions.

What This Enables

If detection parameters can self-tune, several things become possible:

  • Adaptive detection — the system adjusts its sensitivity based on observed channel characteristics. No manual calibration for each deployment.
  • Deployment-specific optimization — detection parameters tuned for the noise floor, coupling dynamics, and exploration patterns of the specific system. Not generic defaults.
  • Continuous improvement — as the system runs more campaigns and collects more data, detection parameters can be refined. The system gets better at perceiving interference the longer it runs.
  • Generalization across components — the same pattern applies to guardrail thresholds, breeder meta-configuration, watermark design. Each component becomes a self-improving subsystem.

Where It Actually Stands

Honesty: none of this is built. Detection parameters are static configuration. Guardrail thresholds are static. Breeder meta-configuration is set once per campaign. The framework that could optimize these parameters exists — it's the same framework that optimizes infrastructure — but it hasn't been pointed at itself yet.

What exists: - Detection works with parameters determined through experimentation and synthesis, proven on benches (p < 0.001 across coupling strengths 0.1 to 0.9) - The optimization framework is general enough to handle arbitrary parameter spaces - The components have identifiable parameters and measurable outcomes

What doesn't exist: - Automatic parameter discovery — making godon's own parameters available as optimization targets - Calibration infrastructure — known coupling scenarios to test against during self-tuning - Objective function definitions — what exactly to optimize for each component (accuracy? speed? false positive rate? all three as a Pareto front?)

These are engineering challenges. The concept is sound. The machinery exists. But shipping it requires work that hasn't been done yet.

The Broader Direction

Meta-optimization isn't limited to detection. It's a direction: any component in the godon stack that has tunable parameters and measurable outcomes is a candidate. Detection first, because the parameters are well-defined and the outcomes are measurable. Then guardrails, then breeder meta-configuration (trial budgets, convergence criteria, reconnaissance sampling), then watermark design.

Eventually: coordination parameters. When multiple breeders need to account for each other, the coordination strategy itself has tunable parameters — how aggressively to decouple, how much to share, when to yield. These could be optimized by the same framework.

The system improves its own perception. Then it improves how it improves perception. Each level uses the same machinery, applied recursively. Not infinitely — each level has concrete parameters and concrete objectives. But the pattern repeats.

Who Optimizes the Optimizer?

The optimizer does. Or rather, it will. The framework is general. The parameters exist. The outcomes are measurable. The missing piece is the engineering work to connect them.

This is the direction: not a fixed tool, but a self-improving one. Not static configuration, but parameters that adapt. The optimization loop, turned inward.
